District Religious Emblem Coordinator

Posted on Jul 28 2014 - 11:05pm

At the end of 2012, The BSA National Relationship Committee released the information that a new position at the Council, District and Unit was being introduced. The position is called the Religious Emblem Coordinator. This position was to help the young people become aware of the God and Country Award that could be earned. Everyone of the members of the National Religious Award Committee was for this new position. It has taken a little over a year to get all of the details worked out and setting up the Council Religious Emblems Coordinator position functioning. This committee is under the Relationships Committee at the Council Level.  Each district in the Council has a person to serving as the District Religious Emblem Coordinator(DREC). Now we are beginning to set up the Unit Religious Coordinator position on the Unit Committee (UREC). The UREC is a member of the Unit Committee and his job is to assist the members of the unit to get the necessary information for each boy or girl in the unit to earn their Religious Award .  It is not the UREC’s job to be a counselor for each award.

In the Scout Handbook is a section on the God and Country award which show what award is available for each religion and how to make contact. If that information is not in the handbook there is a pamphlet available at the Scout Office. Another place that a scout can go is to the website for P.R.A.Y. which is for the Protestant Churches.  The Catholic Church has a similar web site.

This committee person is to make that part of the Scout Oath and Law more visible in our Scouting Units.  Additional information will be made available at the Phoenix District Roundtables in the future.

The Silver Beaver Award is the council-level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America. Recipients of this award are registered adult leaders who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council. The Silver Beaver is an award given to those who implement the Scouting program and perform community service through hard work, self sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service. It is given to those who do not actively seek it.

Sam Houston Area Council has just selected this years Silver Beaver recipients.  Congratulations to our newest Phoenix District Silver Beavers!

The Silver Beaver Award recipients will be presented their award at the Council Recognition Reception on October 28, 2014, at the Chapelwood United Methodist Church (11140 Greenbay, Houston TX 77024) at 7:00 pm. Congratulations to these very deserving Scouters.

October Roundtable - October 2

Posted on Oct 6 2014 - 10:55pm

Hey Scouters!

October is almost here!  Please join us for Roundtable at 7:00pm on Thursday, October 2 at the LDS Church at 16535 Kleinwood Drive (77379).

Break Outs:

  • We'll have your recharter packets available and will provide a short recharter training during the break out for scouters responsible for unit recharter.
  • Cub Scout Roundtable:  Bring both sides of your brain because Al Robb will be presenting on implementing ideas from the STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics) program, which is a great tool to keep your boys excited about Scouting and teaching them great skills to prepare them for life. We’ll breakout into small groups to apply what Al will give us to our particular role in the pack and den. See you there: it’ll be fun, squared!

Unit leaders,

Please make sure that you have someone pick up your recharter packet at the October Roundtable (October 2).  We'll have a training session after the announcements.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at 713-725-4339 or cindy.scanland@gmail.com.

See you Thursday,

Cindy Scanland
