Community Service/Land Stewardship Day

Posted on Jul 28 2014 - 11:06pm

November 15, 2014

The Sam Houston Area Council is celebrating a "Century of Service" in 2014. To commemorate this milestone, we will host a Community Service / Land Stewardship Day and log-in more than 100,000 hours of service across the 16 1/2 counties we serve.  Troops, Packs, Crews, Ships and Teams can perform a service project for their chartered organization, participate in an Eagle Scout project, perform community service or be involved in a larger Land Stewardship project. The Sam Houston Area Council will also be reaching out to organizations in our area, notifying them of this day of service and encourage them to recommend projects in which units can participate.

Service projects that are eligible for this day of service are similar to those that a unit would perform at any other time. Food drives, clothing drives, service projects at schools or churches, Eagle Scout projects, park projects, etc. would all be acceptable projects. We also encourage units to involve churches or schools other groups to participate with their service project. All of those members hours will also count as part of the service hours for that day. Only service hours performed on November 15, 2014 will count for that day, even if the project takes several days to complete.

Participants will earn the fourth segment in the Century of Service patch.

For more information visit http://www.samhoustonbsa.org/community-service-day or e-mail the Phoenix District Community Service / Land Stewardship Day Chair, Bob White at glqman@yahoo.com.

District Religious Emblem Coordinator

Posted on Jul 28 2014 - 11:05pm

Scouters,

At the end of 2012, The BSA National Relationship Committee released the information that a new position at the Council, District and Unit was being introduced. The position is called the Religious Emblem Coordinator. This position was to help the young people become aware of the God and Country Award that could be earned. Everyone of the members of the National Religious Award Committee was for this new position. It has taken a little over a year to get all of the details worked out and setting up the Council Religious Emblems Coordinator position functioning. This committee is under the Relationships Committee at the Council Level.  Each district in the Council has a person to serving as the District Religious Emblem Coordinator(DREC). Now we are beginning to set up the Unit Religious Coordinator position on the Unit Committee (UREC). The UREC is a member of the Unit Committee and his job is to assist the members of the unit to get the necessary information for each boy or girl in the unit to earn their Religious Award .  It is not the UREC’s job to be a counselor for each award.

In the Scout Handbook is a section on the God and Country award which show what award is available for each religion and how to make contact. If that information is not in the handbook there is a pamphlet available at the Scout Office. Another place that a scout can go is to the website for P.R.A.Y. which is for the Protestant Churches.  The Catholic Church has a similar web site.

This committee person is to make that part of the Scout Oath and Law more visible in our Scouting Units.  Additional information will be made available at the Phoenix District Roundtables in the future.
